SIP BENCH III: Parental control tools again in the spotlight

26 tools have been tested in the second testing cycle of SIP BENCH III - Benchmarking of parental control tools.

Tools for PCs and mobile devices were tested against four criteria: functionality, effectiveness, security and usability. Results show that while there are more and more solutions for mobile devices, security remains their weak point. There has not been any significant change in the tools for PCs either. User generated content like Facebook or YouTube is still the biggest challenge for the software producers.

For the first time, so called alternative tools have been tested. These tools create a safe environment for the youngest and are based on white lists, ie lists of selected websites that children can access.

SIP BENCH III experts drafted recommendations not only for the parents, but also for software producers. These include simple steps that could significantly improve tools’ performance (introducing plain language in the messages to users, regular update of the databases, etc.).

We have witnessed an incredible revolution in the way we share information, but supporting young people in safe online activities remains an ongoing challenge - says Natalia Mielech, SIP BENCH III project manager - That is why our team provides parents with a set of recommendations so that they become more educated when it comes to online safety.
