The Global Society Dialogue

Indische Frau am PC
1. Objectives The central objective of the Global Society Dialogue is to work on a framework which can orient a globalised economy towards sustainable development for the benefit of all. Founding partners of the GSD are civil society-based fora with a linkage to governmental institutions and competence in globalisation and information society issues in all their dimensions. The Global Society Dialogue is a forum with an ongoing commitment to reach for and find consensus on core values that could eventually be translated into coherent frameworks for international governance and trade. The approach is civil society-oriented, and the background is the information society and its overriding impact on the future - for good or for bad. Major issues in compromise finding deal with the tension between shareholder value and social solidarity, diversity of cultures and common global values, consumption and care for the environment, short term orientation and the need for long term strategies, innovation and tradition, security and freedom. The Global Society Dialogue deals with sustainability in all its dimensions in a global way, environmental, technological, economic, social, cultural and ethical. The Global Society Dialogue addresses non-governmental organizations, politicians and representatives from industry who are deeply influenced by the new information and communication technologies and who are at the same time aware of their responsibility for a world-wide Sustainable Development. The Global Society Dialogue will accompany and support initiatives of the European Commission and aims at the creation of a Sustainable Information Society not only in the present and future member states of the European Union, but on a global scale. 2. History In 1995 the European Commission set up an "Information Society Forum" with the aim of representing civil society in advising the Commission on all matters related to the implementation of the Information Society. The research lead to the report "A European Way for the Information Society". The Information Society Forum invited information society fora organisations worldwide to discuss the findings reported in the European Way document, to bring in their own perspectives on the issues at stake in an open debate and to initiate a broad dialogue on global frameworks. This resulted in founding the Global Society Dialogue. 3.
