GICT plays an important role in promoting private participation and
developing telecommunications services in the emerging markets. The
Investment arm leverages the expertise of the entire Policy unit in order to
provide both governments and private companies with the capital and
expertise needed to liberalize their telecommunications industries and attract
additional private investment.
Building an efficient telecommunications infrastructure not only nurtures
more competitive commercial environments but also promotes the integration
of emerging economies into the global marketplace. Indeed, the
introduction of a modern
telecommunications network can often
allow developing countries to leapfrog
ahead of their global competitors and
help to close the digital divide.
As the grip of national monopolies
loosens within the telecoms sector,
private companies are competing to
offer fast, reliable service.
Telecommunications projects with
modest capital needs have become
commercially viable in both urban and
rural areas. Opportunities can be as
small as providing Internet services to villagers in Tanzania or as large as
creating a multifunctional, satellite network that spans the globe.
