DIVSI U9-Study: Children in the Digital World
Stefanie Möncke, Stiftung Digitale Chancen
The latest study of under nine years old children provides a detailed overview of how and when children (aged 3-8) come in contact with digital media and the Internet, who accompanies them on their way in the digital world, which skills they acquire and which new ones they need. Furthermore the study offers information about both the involvement of parents and the influence of people and institutions outside the family. It also provides information about the importance of parents, educators and teachers attached to the Internet for the children's future and what opportunities and risks are perceived here.
The key findings
All of the surveyed children show a general openness towards digital media. They move independently around the Internet. About 1.2 million are regularly online. Children with no literacy skills orientate themselves by symbols.
The socio-economic background of the children has no influence on the technical equipment and access to appropriate devices. A further outcome is that the way of using the Internet is significantly influenced by the parents’ own school level. While children of parents with low formal education use the Internet primarily as a leisure medium, children of parents with high education use digital media more often for learning and for the search of information.
The study shows that parents and teachers ascribe a high meaning to the Internet and unity consists in the fact that children must acquire digital competences. Also school and cultural institutions stand in the duty to accompany children competently on the way into the digital world.
The German Institute for Trust and Security on the Internet is a non-profit organization with the aim to create a bridge between confidence and security on the Internet. It is under the patronage of Roman Herzog (Former President).
