Aim of the project
The Kibera Girls Soccer Academy (KGSA) in the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya was founded in 2006 in order to overcome gender inequality in education. Girls soccer is what makes the school so special and distinguishes it from other projects. The idea to give girls from a slum a new outlook on live via education and the opportunity to play soccer, immediately inspired us. And from this first link and a visit to the school 2011 the idea was born to collect money and start the project Girls Soccer and Digital Literacy and be able to support the school in thus way.
Internet and computer literacy is becoming more and more important at Kenyan schools. Internet access is rather cheap in Nairobi, mobile access costs about ten cent per day. New learning offers can thus improve education and the girls will be able to obtain skills they will need for their start in professional jobs.
During a year and a half the Digital Opportunities Foundation collected donations, prepared the project and in August 2013 two staff members were sent to Nairobi to work on the subject of internet and computers with the teachers and students at the school in Kibera. Of course, we took computers that stayed at the school. Thus the girls have a chance to continue to use them for their studies.
