Aim of the project

From 2003 to 2010 the German organisation Aktion Mensch and the Digital Opportunities Foundation each year awarded barrier-free internet services in German with a BIENE. BIENE stands for Barrierefreies Internet eröffnet neue Einsichten (Barrier-Free Internet opens new perspectives), but also for communication, joint action and productive cooperation. Approximately 1,8000 businesses and organisations, agencies and ministries, cities and communities, as well as clubs and unions in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and South Tyrol took part in the competition. More than 100 websites were awarded a BIENE.

It is planned to continue the BIENE Award. Accessibility still is an important topic and the competition is one of the most successful and most important projects for the Aktion Mensch and the Digital Opportunities Foundation. We would like to take some time to reconsider the basic conception of the next competition.

The Digital Opportunities Foundation organised the submissions of the entries and chose, together with the BIENE board of advisors, the winners. For this, the entries are submitted to a detailed check of their accessibility.
