In Europe, older adults remain one of the groups most at risk of digital exclusion. Many lack access to digital training, confidence in using digital tools, or opportunities to learn in supportive environments.  “Digital Mobility in Old Age – Tablet PCs for Senior Citizens” addresses this challenge by empowering older adults with the digital skills, confidence and support needed to participate actively in today’s digital society.

The project addresses broader digital topics such as online safety, digital well-being, digital trends and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. It raises awareness of both the opportunities and risks of the digital environment, helping older adults navigate it in an informed, critical, and self-determined manner

To achieve these goals, the initiative provides practical and accessible learning opportunities that introduce older people to the diverse possibilities of the digital world. Originally, the project focused on providing tablet PCs in order to give older adults their first hands-on experience with digital tools in a supportive and inclusive environment. Over time, the initiative has evolved into a broader digital inclusion program that combines basic digital skills, media literacy and confidence-building learning formats for older adults.

Aim of the project

The project seeks to reduce digital barriers by improving accessibility, building confidence, and encouraging active engagement in the digital environment. Its core objective is to empower older adults and their facilitators to use digital devices confidently and independently in their daily lives, enabling meaningful participation in digital society.

The initiative was launched in 2012 by the Digital Opportunities Foundation in cooperation with O₂ Telefónica Germany and is implemented across Germany. Since its launch, the program has continuously evolved and expanded, reaching older adults through workshops, community-based activities and innovative digital learning formats.

By implementing this project, we are contributing to the realisation of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
